The great british bake off

chapter 3 series 1, episode 3 - bread week

Bread week started and Robert was already wearing a bigger size in clothes.
Bread took longer than the cakes or biscuits to prepare because of the time that it took for the yeast to prove. Amy used the proving time to practice her biscuits and cakes.
Her first bread had walnuts in it. She cut him a slice direct from the oven and smeared it with butter. Robert had to have four more slices just to see how delicious it was! It was certainly worth waiting for. He cut himself another thick slice and spread the butter on it. He watched as the butter melted into the hot bread and took a bite.
The whole loaf was gone before he left for work the next day!
Robert had always enjoyed his food, but he always cooked the same things. Eating had become boring for him. Amy's baking had reminded him how good food could be. He wanted more all the time. He never refused a second, or third slice, sometimes he'd even manage a fourth slice. He was becoming more greedy and it was definitely having an affect on his figure.
She made a Jamaican ginger cake for him. She sliced it up and put it all in a box for him to take to work for his colleagues. Indeed, he did take it to work, but he hid the box in his office drawer and helped himself to a slice whenever he thought no one was looking. In two days the cake was gone and he'd eaten the whole thing. That was bad enough, but he'd also eaten half a cob loaf with lots of butter and half a dozen Chelsea buns as well as his regular meals.
By the end of bread week, his new clothes were no longer loose. First thing in the morning, his stomach was flat, but that did not last. He developed a little paunch as soon as he started eating his breakfast and it never left him all day. By the time he went to bed, he'd it had grown into a little pot belly he was that full. Not only that, but his jawline has started to soften. He'd never been that muscular, but now they were even less visible as they were starting to be covered with a thin blanket of extra fat.
Some days he found it hard going, but he had to, for Amy's sake. As long as she was busy doing something, she would not get bored. When she was bored she got moody. He hated it when she got like that. Nothing he did would please her. If he bought her flowers to cheer her up, she would bite his head off because he must have done something wrong to feel guilty enough to buy her flowers! He could to do anything right when she was like that. At least the baking kept her happy and he was happy to continue sampling her food.
