The gym smelled like lemon disinfectant and other people's ambition. Chloe stood just inside the glass doors, arms crossed over a torso she'd been avoiding mirrors to see. The reception desk glowed with screens of membership tiers and class schedules, none of which she cared about. Her only objective was to find the women's locker room, change, and somehow survive an hour without dying of shame.

Her phone buzzed. A text from her mother: How's the new you coming along? Chloe shoved it back into her pocket.

She'd been the girl who peaked at seventeen. Homecoming queen, varsity cheer captain, the one who decided which lunch table you were allowed to sit at. Then high school ended, and so did the attention. Her boyfriend, the quarterback, of course, had stuck around for two years after graduation before trading her in for a freshman sorority girl with a thigh gap and a trust fund.

So here she was. Twenty-four, single, and carrying thirty extra pounds of what her mother generously called "relationship weight."

"Chloe Barnes?"

The voice came from her left. Low, warm, and horribly familiar.

She turned.

The woman standing there wore black leggings and a fitted tank top that showed off arms sculpted like a climber's. Her dark hair was short and spiky. Her smile was a knife wrapped in velvet.

Bree Donovan.

The girl she'd tormented for three years. The girl whose lunch she'd knocked out of her hands sophomore year. The girl she'd called "Bree the Beast" until it caught on with the entire junior class. The girl who'd transferred schools senior year without a single goodbye.

"Oh my god," Chloe said, her voice pitching high. "Bree. Hi. Wow."

"Small world." Bree's eyes traveled down Chloe's body and back up. It wasn't subtle. It wasn't meant to be. "I heard you were looking for a trainer. Imagine my surprise when I saw the name on the intake form."

Chloe's cheeks burned. "I didn't know you worked here."

"I own the place." Bree gestured at the gym around them. "Well, co-own. My business partner handles the financial side. I handle the clients." She tilted her head. "You're my two o'clock, aren't you?"

Of course she was.

"Unless you want to reschedule," Bree added. "I'd understand. History and all."

There it was. The out. Chloe could take it. Could walk out the door, find a different gym, a different trainer, someone who didn't know every cruel nickname she'd ever invented. But her mother's text still stung in her pocket, and the mirror in her bathroom had become an enemy, and she was so tired of hiding.

"No," Chloe said. "I'm your two o'clock."

Bree's smile widened just a fraction. "Perfect. Let's get started."

---

The assessment room was small and warm, with a scale in the corner and a clipboard on the counter. Bree closed the door behind them. The click of the latch sounded louder than it should have.

"Step on," Bree said, tapping the scale with one finger.

Chloe kicked off her sneakers. She hadn't been weighed in front of anyone since high school physicals. The number on the digital display was worse than she'd feared.

Bree didn't gasp. Didn't flinch. She just wrote something on the clipboard with a calm, clinical precision that made Chloe want to disappear.

"Body fat percentage next," Bree said. "I'll need you to lift your shirt and lower the waistband of your leggings."

"Excuse me?"

"Calipers. Standard procedure." Bree held up the metal tool. "Unless you'd rather skip the detailed assessment."

Chloe would rather have skipped the entire gym. But she lifted her shirt, exposing the soft roll of her belly that her ex had once called "cute" in a way that meant the opposite. Bree's fingers were cool and firm as she pinched the skin at Chloe's hip.

"Breathe," Bree said.

Chloe hadn't realized she'd been holding her breath.

The caliper clicked. Bree wrote more numbers. Then she stepped back, and her eyes met Chloe's with an expression that was impossible to read.

"You've gained about forty pounds since senior year," Bree said. "Give or take."

"Thirty-five," Chloe whispered.

"Does it matter?"

It shouldn't have. But it did. It mattered because Chloe had spent years measuring her worth in pounds and inches and the number of boys who turned to look when she walked past. Now nobody looked. Except Bree, who was looking too closely.

"Here's what I propose," Bree said, setting the clipboard down. "Twelve weeks. Three sessions a week. I'll design a program specifically for your body type and goals. We'll track everything, weight, measurements, photos. No secrets between us."

Chloe swallowed. "Photos?"

"Trust the process." Bree's hand landed on Chloe's shoulder. Warm. Brief. "I know we have history. I'm willing to let it go if you are."

"I'm willing," Chloe said, too fast.

"Good." Bree's thumb brushed the edge of Chloe's collarbone before she pulled away. "We start tomorrow. Wear something you can move in."

---

The first session nearly killed her.

Bree worked her through squats and lunges and something called a "farmer's carry" that made her arms shake like leaves. Sweat soaked through her shirt by the fifteen-minute mark. Her face was blotchy and red, and Bree kept correcting her form with hands that lingered just a second too long.

"Knees out," Bree said, pressing Chloe's thighs apart at the bottom of a squat. "You're built for power, not speed. Use your weight."

"Use my weight," Chloe gasped. "It's not like I have a choice."

Bree laughed. It was a real laugh, low and rough, and it did something complicated to Chloe's chest.

"You'd be surprised," Bree said.

Afterward, in the locker room, Chloe sat on the bench and tried not to cry. Her muscles screamed. Her pride was somewhere on the floor under the bench.

Bree appeared in the doorway, a water bottle in each hand. She tossed one to Chloe.

"You did good today."

"I nearly threw up twice."

"That's the sign of a good workout." Bree sat down beside her, close enough that their thighs almost touched. "Want to know a secret?"

Chloe nodded, still breathless.

"I used to hate you," Bree said, matter-of-fact. "Senior year, I thought about you every day. Not in a good way. In the way where you rehearse arguments in the shower and never get to have them."

Chloe's throat tightened. "I'm sorry. For all of it."

"I know." Bree turned to look at her. "That's why I'm going to help you."

The words should have been reassuring. They weren't. There was something underneath them, something Chloe couldn't name, a current running under the surface of Bree's calm voice. But Chloe was too tired and too grateful and too desperate to lose the weight that had become her whole personality.

"Thank you," she said.

Bree smiled. "Don't thank me yet."

---

Week three brought the photos.

Bree posed her in front of a white wall, wearing a sports bra and the same leggings she'd worn the first day. Chloe's belly hung over the waistband. Her arms looked softer than she'd thought. Bree's camera clicked and clicked.

"Arms up," Bree said. "Turn to the side. Now back. Chin up."

"This is humiliating."

"It's data." Bree lowered the camera. "You want to lose weight, don't you?"

"Yes."

"Then trust me." Bree stepped closer. Her voice dropped. "You're doing so well, Chloe. I'm proud of you."

The praise hit Chloe somewhere low and warm. Her nipples tightened against the fabric of her sports bra. She crossed her arms over her chest and hoped Bree hadn't noticed.

Bree noticed everything.

"Get dressed," she said. "We're doing something different today."

---

The "something different" was a protein smoothie session.

Bree led her to a small office off the main gym floor, where a blender sat on a mini-fridge. The room was dim, lit by a single lamp and the glow of a computer screen. A chair sat in the middle of the floor.

"Sit," Bree said.

Chloe sat.

Bree handed her a glass filled with a thick, tan liquid. "Drink."

"What's in it?"

"Protein. Peanut butter. Banana. A few things I've been testing." Bree leaned against the counter, arms crossed, watching. "We're going to change your relationship with food. Reward, not punishment. Drink."

The smoothie was delicious. Rich and cold and sweet. Chloe drained half the glass in one go, then paused, suddenly self-conscious.

"You're staring," she said.

"I like watching you."

The words landed like a slap. Chloe looked up. Bree's expression hadn't changed-still calm, still professional. But her eyes were dark, and her lips were parted just slightly.

"Why?" Chloe asked.

"Because you were always the prettiest girl in school," Bree said. "And I always wondered what you'd look like with a little more of you to hold onto."

Chloe's heart stopped. "What?"

Bree pushed off the counter and walked toward her. Slow steps. Deliberate. She stopped just out of arm's reach.

"You heard me."

Chloe set the glass down on the floor. Her hands were shaking. "Bree, I don't-"

"You don't what?" Another step. "You don't want me to touch you?"

"I didn't say that."

"Then what are you saying?"

Chloe couldn't breathe. The air was thick with the smell of peanut butter and Bree's shampoo and something else, something electric. Bree reached down and took the glass from the floor, brought it back to Chloe's lips.

"Finish it," she said.

Chloe drank. Bree's fingers brushed her chin, tilting her head back. The last of the smoothie slid down Chloe's throat, and Bree's thumb traced the line of her jaw.

"Good girl," Bree whispered.

The words went through Chloe like a current. Her thighs pressed together. Her breath came in short, sharp bursts.

Bree smiled. Slow. Knowing.

"You liked that."

"No."

"Liar." Bree's thumb moved to Chloe's lower lip, pressing just enough to part it. "You were a bully, Chloe. You made my life hell. And now here you are, sitting in my chair, drinking my smoothie, wanting me to touch you."

Chloe's eyes burned. "I'm sorry."

"I know." Bree leaned down, her lips a breath from Chloe's ear. "But sorry doesn't change what you are."

"What am I?"

Bree pulled back just enough to meet her eyes. "You're a girl who needs someone to take control. Someone to tell her what to eat, how to move, how much she's allowed to want."

Chloe's pulse hammered in her throat. "That's not-"

"Isn't it?" Bree's hand slid to the back of Chloe's neck, fingers threading into her hair. "You came here because you wanted to disappear. Instead, you're sitting in a dark room with the girl you used to torture, and you're wet. Don't lie to me."

Chloe closed her eyes. It was true. She could feel it in the slick heat between her legs, the ache that had been building since the first time Bree's hands corrected her form.

"I don't know what I want," she whispered.

"That's okay." Bree's grip tightened. "I'll tell you."

And then Bree kissed her.

It wasn't gentle. It was a claiming-teeth and tongue and the taste of peanut butter and something bitter underneath. Chloe made a sound she'd never made before, a small, desperate noise that vibrated against Bree's mouth. Bree's hand pulled her hair, tilting her head back, and her other hand slid under Chloe's shirt, palm flat against the soft curve of her belly.

"This," Bree murmured against her lips. "This is what I've been waiting for."

Chloe grabbed Bree's hips, pulling her closer. Bree's thigh slid between hers, and the pressure made Chloe gasp. She ground against it without thinking, a slow, helpless rock of her hips.

"That's it," Bree said. "Take what you need."

The door handle rattled.

Bree pulled back. The sound of the gym rushed in-music, weights clanking, someone laughing.

"Next session," Bree said, stepping away, "we'll talk about your diet. I think you're going to like what I have planned."

Chloe sat there, flushed and trembling, her lips swollen and her belly still warm from Bree's touch. The glass was empty. Her phone buzzed again. Her mother.

Well?

Chloe didn't answer. She stared at Bree's back as she walked out the door, and she knew, with a certainty that terrified her, that she was going to come back. She was going to come back, and she was going to do whatever Bree told her to do. Because for the first time in years, someone was looking at her like she mattered.

Even if that someone had every reason to want her destroyed.

Week four, and Chloe's leggings were tighter.

She noticed in the mirror before Bree said anything. The waistband dug into her stomach. Her face looked fuller. The scale, when Bree made her step on it, read four pounds heavier.

"You're sneaking food," Bree said, not a question.

Chloe's cheeks burned. "I'm not."

"Your macros are perfect. Your calories are tracked. The only way you gain weight is if you're eating something you're not supposed to." Bree circled her, slow. "What is it? Late night snacks? Fast food on the way home?"

Chloe said nothing.

Because Bree was right.

There was a gas station two blocks from her apartment. Every night after her sessions, she bought a pack of cookies and ate them in her car, crumbs scattered across the dashboard. She didn't know why she did it. The shakes Bree gave her after workouts were already rich and filling. But the hunger, the real hunger, wasn't in her stomach.

It was in her chest. Her throat. The hollow space where her willpower used to be.

"Show me your hands," Bree said.

Chloe held them out. Bree took them, turned them over, examined her fingers. Chloe's heart hammered.

"You taste like sugar," Bree said. "Vanilla. Cheap cookies."

Chloe's eyes stung. "I'm sorry."

"Don't be." Bree's thumbs pressed into Chloe's palms. "I told you to trust me. I didn't say you'd be good at it." She released one hand, cupped Chloe's jaw. "You want to be caught, don't you?"

The question landed like a blow. Chloe tried to shake her head, but Bree's grip held firm.

"You want me to find the wrappers in your purse. You want me to scold you. You want me to watch you fail so I have to punish you."

Chloe's thighs pressed together. Her breath came shallow.

"Tomorrow," Bree said, "double the protein shake. No more sneaking. And if you do-" She leaned in, lips brushing Chloe's ear. "I'll find out. And I'll make sure you remember why you belong to me."

She pulled back, professional smile in place. "Now get changed. We're doing squats until you cry."
