Chapter 1 - Trying to Love two things
Listen to this chapter - just press play:
Daniel was everything she'd ever wanted. Kind, brilliant, an aerospace engineer who'd made his first million before thirty. They'd met at a charity gala two years earlier, and their courtship had been old-fashioned in the best way-flowers, handwritten letters, and a mutual decision to wait until their wedding night.
The reception ended at midnight. By the time they reached the honeymoon suite, Elena's heart was hammering with anticipation. What followed was tender, exhilarating, all said she made love to her new husband four times before dawn painted the windows gold.
She woke sore and blissful, noticing nothing amiss beyond a pleasant fatigue. The scale in the marble bathroom read 106. She attributed it to champagne, wedding cake, and water retention. Nothing to worry about.
---
Their honeymoon took them to a private villa in St. Lucia. Mornings began with sex, days were spent lounging on the beach, and nights ended tangled in expensive sheets. By day four, Elena was wrestling with a pair of linen shorts that had slipped on effortlessly when she'd packed them.
"Stupid dryer shrinkage," she muttered, sucking in hard to fasten the button. The fabric dug into her hips, and when she turned sideways in the mirror, a small pudge of belly puffed over the waistband.
She poked at it. Vacation weight. It happens to everyone. She'd dropped three pounds before a shoot once by cutting carbs for a week. This was nothing.
By day seven, nothing had become something. Her favorite white jeans refused to button at all. Her bikini top strained in a way that made her cleavage look amazing, yes, but also... different. Softer. When she stepped onto the hotel scale and saw 126, her blood went cold.
Twenty-six pounds. In one week.
That night, after she'd paced the villa for an hour in anxious silence, Daniel sat her down. His face was pale, his hands trembling slightly.
"Elena, I need to tell you something. About me. About why this happened."
The story he told was absurd. A curse, a condition, a bizarre quirk of his body-every time he climaxed inside or on a woman, or brought her to climax, she gained exactly one pound. If they both finished, it was a pound and a half.
Elena laughed. "That's not a thing. That's not medically possible."
"I know how it sounds."
"Then prove it wrong." She marched to the bathroom scale, stepped on. "126.0. See? Now we'll-" She swallowed, suddenly nervous. "We'll do it again, and I'll weigh exactly the same after."
Twenty minutes later, she stepped back onto the scale. 127.0.
Her mouth went dry. "That's-coincidence. Water weight. We didn't... maybe I didn't..."
"You did," Daniel said quietly.
"Again." Her voice cracked. "Do it again."
Round two. Scale: 128.0.
Elena sank onto the cold tile floor. Her emotions pinwheeled-shock, then fury, then a deep, gutting despair. She'd married this man. He'd known. He'd let her walk into this blind.
"How could you not tell me?" Her voice was ice.
"I was terrified you'd leave."
"I might have." She pressed her palms against her thickening thighs. "My career, Daniel. My body is my career. You've just taken that from me."
---
She took an extra week off work, calling in sick. Every morning she ran five miles, ate nothing but egg whites and steamed broccoli, sweated through two-hour gym sessions. The scale crept down grudgingly. After seven days of punishing effort, she'd lost ten pounds.
She was 118 when she walked back into Ford & Blossom. Eighteen pounds heavier than before the wedding. The clothes she'd selected that morning were meant to be loose-a flowing blouse and tailored slacks-but they clung in all the wrong places. The blouse puckered at the buttons over her chest. The slacks hugged her rear with scandalous precision. She'd had to lie flat on the bed to zip them.
"Elena! Look at you, all happy and married!" Tanya, another model, breezed past and did a double take. Her eyes swept Elena's figure with undisguised surprise. "Someone's been enjoying marital bliss. That's some serious relationship weight, girl."
Before Elena could respond, Tanya's fingers found her waist and pinched. A small roll of flesh, new and soft, bulged between them.
"Oh my God, it's adorable. You've got a little belly now!"
Elena's face burned. She forced a laugh. "Just a bit of honeymoon indulgence."
"A bit?" Another coworker, Meredith, circled around. "Honey, your ass looks like it ate your old ass." She gave it a light smack. "Daniel must be a good cook."
The walk to her boss's office felt like a mile. Every pair of eyes tracked her, whispers trailing behind like smoke. In the mirror paneling of the hallway, she caught her reflection and nearly stopped breathing. There was a softness under her chin now, a blurring of the sharp jawline that had landed her so many campaigns. Her waist, once concave, had filled in. Her hips flared wider against the straining fabric of her slacks.
She hated what she saw.
Her boss, Claudia, took one look at her and sighed. "The swimsuit shoot is postponed a week. Lose what you can. We'll photograph you in darker lighting."
Elena nodded mutely.
---
She came home and wept. Daniel held her, murmuring apologies, and somewhere in the blur of tears and shame she pulled him to the bedroom. She didn't want to think anymore. She wanted to feel something other than humiliation.
As they finished together, she felt it for the first time-a distinct, spreading warmth that rippled outward from her core, settling over her stomach and hips like a wave of heated silk. She gasped. It wasn't painful. It was almost... pleasant. A soft thickening that she could feel happening in real time, her skin growing tighter for just a moment before relaxing into its new, slightly fuller shape.
She didn't weigh herself that night. She already knew.
---
The following week, she was merciless. She cut her calories to 800 a day, ran until her knees ached, and refused Daniel's touch entirely. By the day of the rescheduled shoot, she'd clawed her way down to 109. Still nine pounds heavier than her pre-wedding weight, but with clever styling and some strategic retouching promises from the photographer, it was deemed acceptable.
She stood in front of the mirror in the dressing room, turning sideways. Her stomach was flat again, almost. Her thighs still touched at the top when she walked. Her collarbones were still visible, but softer, less pronounced. She looked... healthy. Normal. For a regular woman, she'd be thin. For a model, she was skating on thin ice.
Never again, she promised herself.
Over the next two weeks, with zero intimacy, she worked her way back to 100 pounds. Her body snapped back into its familiar sharp angles. She booked three shoots. Life felt almost normal.
But a marriage cannot survive on denial forever.
She and Daniel developed a system. Once every other week, they allowed themselves sex-carefully, with only him finishing. One pound gained. That pound was then burned off over the following fourteen days through extra cardio and strict eating. It worked. The scale stayed at 100. Her career continued.
Months passed. She was lean. She was employed. She was miserable.
Daniel never complained, but she saw the loneliness in his eyes. The way he'd reach for her in the dark and then stop himself. The careful distance they maintained like roommates sharing a bed. The spreadsheet she'd taped to the refrigerator tracking her "safe" days.
One evening, he kissed her forehead and rolled away, and she heard the quietest sigh escape him. Something inside her cracked.
That night she booked a cabin in the mountains for the following week.
---
"I've been thinking," she said on their first morning there, the pines swaying outside the window. "This-what we've been doing-it's not sustainable."
Daniel's face tightened. "I know."
"I love my career. I love being a model. But I love you more." Her voice shook, but she pressed on. "If you're willing to stay with me even if I get... soft... even if I have to find a new job, then I want to stop counting. I want us to have sex whenever we want, like a normal couple."
He stared at her. "Elena, you don't have to-"
"I want to. I choose this. I choose you."
What followed was a week of abandon. They didn't keep track. They made love in the mornings, in the afternoons, sometimes twice in a night. Each time, that warm wave washed over her-her hips, her belly, her thighs, her breasts, all gently expanding outward. She felt her body changing day by day, her clothes fitting differently, her reflection softening.
She'd thought ahead, packing only yoga pants, loose sundresses, and forgiving sweaters. Nothing with a button. Nothing with a zipper.
On their last morning, she stepped on the cabin scale. 118. Eighteen pounds in one week. The beginning of the end.
She found her jean booty shorts-the ones that had fit perfectly when they arrived-and held them up. Laughing, she tried to pull them on. They made it to mid-thigh before refusing to budge. She wiggled, hopped, and finally gave up, the waistband wedged firmly below the swell of her backside.
"Well," she said to Daniel, who was watching from the bed with a mixture of adoration and guilt. "Those are never going to fit again."
---
The next day, she walked into Ford & Blossom in an outfit she'd purchased the night before, two sizes larger than her pre-cabin wardrobe. A billowy blouse, a knee-length skirt with an elastic waist. She'd thought it would hide her. It did not.
Her cheeks were crimson as she moved through the office. Models she'd worked with for years turned and stared. Some whispered behind cupped hands. Others didn't bother to whisper at all.
"Oh my God, she's blown up."
"Is she pregnant?"
"No, that's just fat. Look at her arms."
She found Claudia in her office. "I need to be upfront," Elena said, her voice quavering. "I have a medical condition. I'm not going to be able to control my weight the way I used to. I'll take whatever work you can offer until..." She trailed off.
Claudia leaned back, surveying her with cold appraisal. "Until you don't fit our vision anymore? Honey, I'm surprised you still fit your pants. If you did this much damage in one week, I'd be shocked if you're still employable here a month from now."
The words hit like a slap. Elena's composure shattered. She fled the office in tears, the sound of stifled laughter following her down the hall.
She went home and fell into Daniel's arms. In her grief and shame, she pulled him to bed. She knew what it would cost her. She did it anyway. The warm wave spread through her, softening her further, and she buried her face in his chest and cried.
---
They settled into a new rhythm. No more spreadsheets. No more careful abstinence. Daniel made love to her whenever the mood struck, and the mood struck often. The scale climbed five pounds every week, steady as a metronome.
A month later, Elena weighed 138 pounds. She hadn't received a single call from the agency, but her contract paid monthly, and she needed that last check. She dressed in her loosest clothing-a dark tunic, leggings, a long cardigan-and went to the office fully expecting to be handed her walking papers.
Claudia wasn't there. Instead, the agency's creative director, Marcus, intercepted her in the hallway. He was a wiry man with an eye for unconventional beauty, and the way he looked at her now made Elena's skin prickle.
"Take off the cardigan," he said.
"Excuse me?"
"Humor me."
Reluctantly, she shrugged it off. Marcus circled her slowly. His hands, cool and clinical, reached out and cupped the soft roll of her belly through the tunic. He squeezed gently, making the flesh dimple around his fingers. Then he did the same to her rear, jiggling it slightly. Elena stood frozen, her face blazing.
"Interesting," he murmured. "Too heavy for traditional, obviously. But we're launching a plus-size division next quarter. You're still proportional, still beautiful. And at this size..." He stepped back, nodding. "You're exactly what we need. Same pay. Different clientele. Interested?"
She should have been offended. Instead, she felt a flood of desperate relief. She'd been out of work for a month, her savings dwindling, her future uncertain. She said yes.
---
Plus-size modeling at Ford & Blossom meant walking past her former colleagues every morning. They took full advantage.
"Look, it's Elena the elephant."
"Hey, did the last ten pounds go straight to your ass? Because that thing is getting its own zip code."
"I can't even see her belt under that muffin top. She's really letting herself go."
"Check out those drooping tits. Gravity's winning."
She endured it, chin high, eyes forward. Every day she came to work, posed in clothes sized for her 138-pound frame, and collected her check.
But she was still gaining. By the end of her first month in the plus-size division, she was closing on 160. The clothes assigned to her-originally loose and comfortable-had become obscenely tight. Seams screamed. Buttons begged for mercy. She spent every shoot sucking in, holding her breath, praying nothing would tear.
One afternoon, between shots, she dropped her phone. When she bent over to retrieve it, the leather booty shorts she'd been zipped into gave up entirely. The seam split from waistband to crotch with a sound like ripping canvas.
She straightened up in horror, instinctively leaning backward and trying to cover her exposed rear with both hands. The shift in posture was too much for her button-front blouse. With a sharp ping, the button over her navel shot across the room and clattered against a lighting rig. Her belly surged forward, round and pale, spilling through the gap.
Time stopped. She stood there, half-exposed, red from hairline to collarbone, waiting for the laughter.
It didn't come.
Instead, one of her fellow plus-size models-a gorgeous woman named Rochelle who wore a size 18 with pride-rushed over with a robe. "Oh, sweetie, it happens to all of us. That's what we get for trusting these cheap wardrobe pieces." Another model brought her a pair of stretchy lounge pants. The woman who ran the craft services table appeared with a pink box.
"Here, darling. Nothing fixes a wardrobe malfunction like sugar."
It was a dozen glazed doughnuts. Elena looked at them, felt the sting of tears, and then-without fully understanding why-ate one. Then another. By the time the replacement pants arrived, she'd eaten four. By the end of the day, she'd finished the entire box, crying softly between bites.
Something clicked in her mind that afternoon. If she was going to end up fat no matter what, she might as well enjoy the ride.
---
She stopped counting calories. She ate the pastries, the pasta, the cheese plates Daniel brought home from work functions. She still had sex with her husband-frequently, joyfully, without guilt. The warm wave of each mutual climax added another soft layer, and she greeted it with grim acceptance.
A month later, she weighed 178. Claudia called her in.
"You're too big," she said flatly. "Even for us. Don't come back."
Elena cleaned out her locker. She walked the gauntlet of skinny models one last time, ignoring their smirks. At least I'm free of this place, she thought. At least I'm loved.
---
Daniel hired her as the office secretary at his engineering firm. It was a small business-thirty employees, a cozy building, a break room stocked with free pastries every morning. She wore jeans now, or A-line skirts, nothing too clingy. She was wider than most of the wives who came for the holiday party. She was wider than her husband, actually, a fact that stunned her the first time she stood beside him in a full-length mirror.
She'd topped 200 pounds by her second month at the office. Her body had settled into its new shape-a heavy bosom, a soft double belly, thighs that brushed from knee to hip, a rear that required strategic navigation through doorways. She'd had to replace her office chair because her hips no longer fit between the armrests. The new one was wide and sturdy. She'd bought another size up in clothing-this time a 16-and told herself it was the last time.
It actually was. The gain slowed. Her body found its equilibrium. She ate what she wanted, loved her husband without restraint, and learned to ignore the whispers of her new coworkers about the boss's fat wife.
One night, as they lay in bed-her head on his shoulder, his hand resting comfortably on the generous curve of her hip-she thought about the girl who had once cried over a button popping off her blouse. She seemed so far away now, so brittle and scared.
"I'm happy," she said, surprising herself. "I didn't think I would be. But I am."
Daniel kissed the top of her head. "I've always thought you were beautiful. Every version of you."
She believed him. The weight was the price of their love, and looking at her life now-full of warmth, full of laughter, full of pastries and passion-she decided it was worth every pound.
