Chapter 1 New Beginnings
Mia stood at the doorway, two suitcases at her feet, a backpack over one shoulder, and a hopeful smile on her lips. The hallway of the apartment smelled faintly like old wood and something sweet baking in the distance. She liked it already.New city. New place. New life.
At 21, Mia was ready for a fresh start. She hadn’t planned to move out so suddenly, but after her last roommate bailed and her old job dried up, this was the push she needed. A room in a cute old apartment in the heart of the city, shared with a woman named Lisa who had seemed kind and relaxed on the phone. And more importantly—normal.
Mia adjusted the strap of her bag and knocked. The door creaked open almost instantly.
And there she was.
Lisa.
Tall, soft, striking. There was something instantly magnetic about her—she had this rich, inviting smile, hair in a loose bun, cheeks round and flushed like she’d just come from a warm kitchen. Her figure filled the doorway: plush, wide hips, heavy breasts under a dark tank top, and a belly that curved out generously over high-waisted leggings.
“Hey, you must be Mia,” Lisa said, stepping aside to let her in. Her voice was deep and warm, a little husky.
“Yeah! Hi,” Mia said with a breathless laugh, brushing a strand of her short brown hair behind her ear. “Thanks again for… well, everything.”
Lisa smiled wider. “Of course. I think you’ll really like it here.”
Mia stepped inside, taking in the space. The apartment was cozy and open, warm lighting, lots of throw pillows and plants. And from the kitchen, a smell—something buttery, almost caramelized—floated through the air.
“You hungry?” Lisa asked, already heading toward the kitchen. “I made a batch of my famous welcome-to-the-apartment-shakes.”
Mia blinked. “Shakes?”
Lisa grinned over her shoulder. “Don’t worry. Secret recipe. But nothing weird. Just sweet, creamy, comforting. I like spoiling my roommates a little.”
There was something in her tone. Playful. But deeper, too.
Mia chuckled and dropped her backpack. “Sure. I could use something comforting.”
And that was how it started.
