He was currently rearranging the pantry of their shared apartment, a task he had taken up with a sudden, almost spiritual intensity over the last three weeks. Leo was a man of measurements and margins; he liked things categorized, indexed, and optimized. To anyone else, it looked like he was just being a neat freak, but to Leo, the kitchen was a laboratory where he could quietly manage the variables of their domestic life.
Maya wandered into the kitchen, still in her pajama pants, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She leaned against the doorframe, watching him meticulously move the low-fat crackers to the back of the shelf, replacing them with a "limited edition" buttery shortbread he'd found at the farmer's market. He looked up and beamed at her, his expression warm and genuinely affectionate.
"Morning, sunshine," he said, stepping forward to give her a quick kiss on the forehead. "I made those protein pancakes you like. Well, they're modified-I added a bit of honey for flavor. You looked a little peaked yesterday, and I figured you needed the energy."
"You're a lifesaver," Maya murmured, sliding into the chair. She didn't notice the way Leo's eyes flickered toward the scale in the bathroom, then back to the syrup-drenched stack of pancakes. He watched her eat with a focused, quiet devotion, as if he were observing a slow-motion chemical reaction. To Maya, the honey was just a sweet touch, a gesture of care from a boyfriend who seemed to care about her well-being down to the milligram. She gulped down the last of the coffee-which he had spiked with a heavy splash of organic cream while her back was turned-and felt a sudden, heavy wave of contentment settle in her gut.
The weeks that followed blurred into a rhythmic cycle of "fortified" meals and "energy-boosting" snacks. Leo became a ghost in the pantry, a silent architect of excess. He replaced her almond milk with a heavy cream blend and swapped her light olive oil for a buttery blend, all while maintaining a cheerful, supportive demeanor. Maya felt a strange, soft shift in her body; her jeans grew tight across the hips, and her waist began to soften, blurring the lines of her silhouette. She attributed it to a sudden lack of willpower, blaming herself for the cravings that seemed to arrive out of nowhere, unaware that Leo was meticulously calibrating her caloric intake like a business deal where the only currency was fat.
