Amy watched Lily from across the room, her eyes bright with a silent curiosity as her younger sister settled onto the couch with her usual carefree air. From the kitchen, Mom gave Amy a lookone of those glances that lately had started saying more than words ever could.
Lily, standing at 5’6” with a soft but toned 140-pound frame, always drew attention wherever she went. Her smile, that same charming smile that seemed to captivate everyone, had long been a small thorn in the side of both Amy and her mother. Amy, at 5’4” and a lean 120 pounds, looked almost delicate next to Lily’s lively presence and curvier figure. As for Mom, at 5’10” and a fit 145 pounds, she had once been the center of attention herself, but over time, she’d noticed the spotlight shifting to Lily. In that moment, a mischievous thought crept into her minda small, sweet revenge.
----------
Lily stretched in bed, waking up to the inviting scent of bacon and freshly brewed coffee. A blissful smile crossed her face, savoring the thought of breakfast. She got up lazily, making her way down the stairs to the kitchen. Mom was busy at the stove, looking like she was preparing a feast, while Amy sipped her coffee with that smirk she wore whenever she was anticipating something.
“Good morning, honey,” Mom greeted her, turning with a perfectly practiced smile. “Did you sleep well?”
Always ready with a jab, Amy added, “Hey, sleepyhead! Hope you’re hungry, because Mom’s made an amazing breakfast today.”
“Wow, yeah, this looks incredible!” Lily replied, sliding over to the table with an air of confidence. She sat down, throwing a challenging look at her sister, as if waiting to see her lose ground against her appetite and chatter. “You two wouldn’t believe what you missed this week... between friends, parties, and, well, someone who seems very interested in me,” Lily said, grinning smugly and enjoying the envious glances from the two.
Amy and Mom exchanged a quick look, heavy with restrained jealousy. Mom hid her thoughts behind a sweet smile as she set a towering plate of fluffy pancakes soaked in maple syrup before Lily, alongside crispy bacon, sausage, and sunny-side-up eggs.
“There you go, sweetheart,” Mom said warmly, setting the heaping plate in front of her. “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”
Amy stifled a laugh and added with mock enthusiasm, “You’ve got to try the pancakes, Lily! Mom made them just for you… soft and buttery, just the way you like, right?”
Lily laughed. “You guys really know how to spoil me.” She started eating, launching into a lively recap of her week, recounting in detail all the attention she’d been getting. Every so often, she’d cast a triumphant glance at Amy, relishing the slight irritation her success seemed to bring. With each bite, her ego grew, and that smug smile spread, completely missing the conspiratorial glances passing between Mom and Amy.
Amy, keeping her tone light, watched her devour the meal. “You really don’t realize how much you eat, huh, Lil? You look like you’re in an eating contest!” she chuckled.
“Well, maybe someone cooked a bit too much, don’t you think?” Lily shot back with a haughty laugh, as if it were their fault she was indulging. But she didn’t stop, finishing off her plate with a relish they’d rarely seen before.
Mom watched her closely. “Well, Lily, I’m so glad you’re enjoying this with us. It just makes me happy to see you appreciate my cooking... especially for a girl who’s always so busy with her social life,” she said with a hint of barely hidden irony. She was satisfied, knowing that everything was unfolding exactly as planned. Lily, caught up in her vanity, hadn’t a clue what her family was up to.
After finishing breakfast, Lily leaned back in her chair, resting a hand on her slightly full stomach and chuckling. “Oh, wow, I’m stuffed… like a queen!” she sighed, feeling victorious.
“You really went all in,” Amy observed, her tone playfully sarcastic. “Hope your stomach doesn’t start rumbling in class. Or maybe you’d like that?”
“Don’t worry, I’m all about making a statement,” Lily said, giving a smug grin as she stood up, adjusting her shirt that seemed a bit snug around her waist. She felt a little constrained but shrugged it off, chalking it up to a big breakfast.
Just then, the doorbell rang. It was the guy Lily had mentioned, there to pick her up for school. She lit up, fussing with her hair dramatically, throwing Mom and Amy a look as if to say, “See? Everyone wants me.” Oblivious to the barely concealed irritation this sparked in them, she left with a victorious smile.
“Take care, sweetheart,” Mom called sweetly. “And remember: eat a good lunch! You’ll need the energy.”
“Don’t worry, Mom,” Lily answered, flashing a self-satisfied smile. “I know how to take care of myself. And really, who else knows how to catch attention like I do?” She laughed, casting one last triumphant glance before heading out.
Amy and Mom remained in the kitchen, watching the door close with restrained exasperation. “She could use a reality check,” Amy muttered, her teeth clenched just a bit.
“Don’t worry,” Mom replied with a sly smile. “Our plan is working. Just give it a few weeks, and no one will be looking her way.”
Amy laughed in satisfaction. “You’re right. We’ll start small, then up the ante. And Lily won’t suspect a thing until it’s too late... and she’s too full.”
Mom nodded, a look of devious approval crossing her face. “And then, my dear, we can finally sit back and enjoy our little show.”
