Dinner and a show

Chapter 2

Being married for only a few months, Rex and Penny had given little thought about kids. Penny wanted them but not for a while. She wanted to get situated with Rex and be financially stable enough to support a child. Rex on the other hand, did not want any of his own. He thought they were cute and he liked them. But he didn't think they were for him. Out of the blue Kate put her silverware down and stared at her plate. Rex was on his second helping and enjoy it too, to bad his belt wasn't enjoying it. Penny had just finished and Will was also on his second helping. Penny, being a woman immediately looked at her mother with a concerning look. She just gave a small smile and continued to stare down at her plate while the two boys wolfed down their meal with grace and speed.

"When are you going to have kids?" Kate blared out. Rex immediately started to cough and grabbed for some water. Having pasta go down the wrong pipe can make for a nasty coughing fit. Penny shot a look at her father as if to say "help me". Will gave Rex a good smack on the back and he filled his lungs with air which had now been filling with pasta.

"W-W-W-What?" Rex stuttered while reaching fore his glass of water.

"I said when are you and Penny going to have a child? I want to know." She said, not looking up from her plate.

"Uh..Uh, I don't know. Isn't it a bit early to start thinking about kids, we've only been married for a few months."

"Yes but you two have known each other for several years." She emphasized the word "years" as if she were accusing him of a horrible crime.

"Yeah but." He stopped. There was no point. He shot a look at Penny asking her for help. She just gave him a look of confusion and not knowing what to say she shrugged her shoulders and looked back at her father who was now toying with his food.

"Will?" Kate asked her husband

"What? I can't make them have a baby. It's their choice to make, not mine not yours. Theirs." He said while he looked at his plate and toyed with the spaghetti on his fork. Kate just kept looking at her plate. Penny had also gone to looking at her plate. Silence had filled the room and Rex was the only one looking around. He had to break the silence, even if it killed him, he had to.

"Um." He cleared his throat. "Um...that was good." They all looked up at him and gave him a look that scared him shit less. It was the look of hurt and sadness. He knew and they all knew that he didn't want kids, it hurt him to see his family look at him like he had some disease but they were afraid to tell him it was fatal. He hated seeing Penny look at him with the saddens in her beautiful green eyes that he'd fallen for several years ago.

"I'm sorry." He hung his head in shame and leaned back in his chair. He felt horrible, he'd manage to hurt three people by the time dinner was over and better yet, it was at once, bang bang bang, they all had that sinking feeling of disappointment.

"Don't be." Penny had reached over and put a hand on his lap and was looking at him with a small smile on her face. He still felt horrible and continued to look down. He had noticed a small bulge around his midsection and felt it. His belly was full of spaghetti and garlic bread and yet he felt empty. He felt like puking but he didn't want to lose such a good tasting meal. He just swallowed his pain and shame and kept his dinner down.

"Well, that was a disaster." Rex said as he sat down next to Penny on the couch.

"No it wasn't." She said as he leaned back and she undid his belt which was now straining from the girth of his belly.

"Yeah, sure." He rolled his eye's.

"It was fine. You didn't know Mom was gunna ask something like that. It's not your fault that you didn't know what to say." She said as she laided her head on his shoulder.

"Ha! It was terrible. I feel like such an ass. I upset your mother and you. Your father seems OK with what ever we do but it's you and your mother that I worry about." He said.

"Why do you think it bothers me?"

"Because I know you want kids, and I don't really want any...yet." He mumbled "yet" under his breath.

She sighed. Even though they had pretty much everything in common, that was the only thing they disagreed about.

"So what...I love you for you and your choices...even if we don't have kids, it's fine. I just want to spend my life with you, with or without kids." She smiled at him and placed a hand on his chest and moved in toward his face with her eye's like slits.

"Really? We can't do it here...and I'm a bit to full to do anything either. But trust me, we should when we get home."

"Fine, when we get home I'm tearing your clothes off and throwing you on the bed."

"Sounds like a plan." He said with his eye's like slits and embracing her with a hug and setting her on his lap.

"I thought you said you were to full?" She said playfully in his ear.

"Ha! Never. I can eat till I burst. Especially if it's your mom's cooking, or yours."

"Yeah I know sweetheart. You can fit alot into that belly of yours." She said as she looked down at his bulgeing stomach.
