Em Pregnate

Chapter 1 The New Breeder

Em did not think herself anything unusual or special. Her appearance was pretty average she thought. Not ugly, but not really beautiful either. Em is 5’6” She had a B cup and weighed one hundred pounds even. Em has dark skin and hair. The hair is a bit longer than shoulder length when she lets it down, though it was usually done up. Her athletic prowess was mediocre, the only mark in her favor, she thought, was that she was smarter than most people.

Em stood in line with eight other girls. In a clean, white room. No, not girls, young women. They were Black, White, Asian and Latina. Some were tall, some short. But they all had one thing in common, today was their eighteenth birthday. Eighteen being the age of adulthood was one of the remnants of the old world that the family was trying to maintain. They tried to save the buildings as well, even if most weren’t lit, the city was still a grid of tall, neon lit, skyscrapers. Well, the inhabited ones were lit anyway.

The family was far too late to save most of what humanity had and was. Em had heard stories of the buildings all being lit, illumination stretching out as far as the eye can see. Until the depop happened. It isn’t quite known who was behind it, some say Russia, some Claim the U.S.A., some say China, some claim environmental or terrorist group did it. But nobody was taking credit, maybe it was the wrath of a furious mother earth or God. Whatever the reason and whoever was behind it, the outcome was well known. The depopulation virus, or simply “depop” as it was commonly known, didn’t kill a single person, not directly anyway. No, instead it rendered the vast majority of humanity infertile. Exact numbers aren’t known, but only a miniscule number of women are still able to bear children now. Some thought that, however few they may be, those children would rebuild mankind’s once untouched cities. They were wrong. The plague hit generations ago, yet humanity still works tirelessly to find a way to reverse the effects of the disease before it’s too late. So, the population of mankind fell. From 29 billion at its peak, to a tiny remnant of the past. No cure was found, but a test was created, one to find which women could still have children. The test was given at the age of 18, to preserve the last bit of innocence held by humanity, childhood.

But childhood was gone for Em, and today she stood in a short line to get her blood taken, “Next,” called a voice from the loudspeaker above, and Em stepped forward to meet her destiny. The process had been largely automated before the plague hit, it was simple. Em placed her arm inside a tube made of metal and plastic, then started pressing buttons with her other hand. Each button has a simple descriptor written under it. One button read “Step 1. Positioning” upon pressing the button Em felt vibrations inside the tube as her arm was gently put in place. Some sort of mechanism inside the machine latched onto Em’s arm and held it still. The next button said “Begin” and shortly after Em pushed it she felt a sharp pain in her arm as the device stabbed a hollow needle into a vein to extract blood. Then the device attached a sterile bandage to Em’s arm and released her. As it did an automated voice said “Thank you Sir or Ma’am, the process was successful and you are free to leave.” In a melodic voice. Em was glad she didn’t need the third button labeled “Emergency release” nothing had ever gone wrong with the process before, and Em didn’t want to imagine how that might happen in a device where a machine stabbed her when all goes well.

As Em walked out of the medical office she passed by a sign with a video of a mother rocking a baby played in loop. The woman was smiling down at her child with a face that spoke of a gentle, caring adoration. At the bottom of the poster was a block of text, inside a square made of thick, purple lines. The text read “We must all do our part to sustain humanity. Bearing children is a privilege and a duty for all who can do so. Who knows? The miracle of life may be found in YOU!”

Just past it were a dozen similar screens, displaying more videos and poetic phrases to encourage potential mothers. But Em knew the truth, enough to not want any part of it anyway. Being able to bear children may be good for the species, but it was a curse for the individual. Nobody saw the newly minted breeding population after they’d been found. Once their potential was discovered they simply vanished. Children were regularly sent to the Family’s nursery at the age of five, exactly what happens before that is unknown to all but a select few. Em wouldn’t take the test if she had any say in the matter, but it is mandatory.

So, Em stepped outside into the city. Walking the empty streets always made a chill run down her spine. The majority of the building were empty, some were overgrown with vines and other signs of the metal hull being returned to nature. A breeze blew between the ruined towers, giving a howling sound where a building had deteriorated in just the right way. Rusting cars littered the streets, nobody drove them anymore except a few truck drivers responsible for bringing food from farms to the family. Once she’d gotten to the dorm building Em rushed in and to her room without speaking to anyone unnecessarily.

Once in her little apartment Em sat at the table, which already had her dinner, set out and waiting for her. The dorm staff always had it ready for her when she got home from school and work. But today, as a celebration for her birthday, Em had the entire day free other than the requirement of having the test performed. Em sat down to eat. “TWO apples today!” she said with a smirk as she took a piece of wheat bread in her hand and took a bite. There was normally two slices of bread and one piece of fruit or a few vegetables, but Em suspected she got a double portion of fruit tonight. It was great news, the fruit was always Em’s favorite part. She ate quickly, feeling hungry. One yellow apple and a red one, the yellow kind was the standard, Emily had never had a red one before. It was sweet, almost too sweet, if a bit mealy. Em wasn’t normally big on sweets, but it’s a celebration, besides, extra food was always welcome. The girl was always hungry. Em’s rations had recently been reduced, again. It seemed like there was less food each year now. The family had announced that a larger portion of the population would be put to work at the farms soon. Again. Yet, despite having more farmers, there was less food each year. “What I’d do to have an announcement of more food for once.” Em said, sulking before she began to eat. After this she brushed her teeth and sat down to read, the old library had been emptied long ago, and people would often trade books for favors or goods. Em had cleaned some rooms for a book a while ago. But she didn’t get far into her book that day. In fact. Em didn’t even finish a page before passing out, still seated at the table.

The next thing she knew Em awoke on an armchair, near an oak table in a dimly lit room. Across the table from her sat an old woman with silver hair in tight curls that caused it to stop just above her shoulders. The woman spoke in a gravelly voice “Good morning dearie. I hope you slept well.” Em shook her head to try and wake up faster. Em shook her head to wake herself up, but still felt drugged. The woman said “And congratulations, not only are you going to be a mother soon, but out of the prospective mothers you were one of the only two chosen for our new project.” Em spoke in a half asleep mumble, asking “Project?” the elderly woman nodded and said “Yes, previously a mother could have about one child per year, but with our new project, well” and she paused briefly before finishing, “Things should be different for the two of you.” As Em spoke with the woman she felt more awake by the second, whatever drug she’d been giving was wearing off. Still, Em only managed to force out a single word, “Hungry.” The woman laughed “You want food eh? Well, don’t worry, you should get plenty of that soon enough, even more than the normal mothers, and they get more food than anybody else as things are now.” In addition to feeling more awake Em felt hungry, as if she would starve if she didn’t eat soon. Em looked at the woman and said “I’m sorry if this is rude, but can I eat before we talk more?” the woman nodded and stood up, saying “Of course, follow me.”

Em stood up and followed the elderly woman out of the room and through a labyrinth of hallways. Em couldn’t keep track of how many turns they had made or how many doors they’d passed. Eventually a door opened to some kind of cafeteria. The smell made Em’s mouth water enough that she had to swallow. The source of the smell was clear, to the left was a counter with countless types of food on display. A huge piece of meat grabbed Em’s attention. Next to the door was a bin filled with dishes and silverware. Em found a large skewer that seemed to be there for this item exactly. She took a skewer and stabbed the piece of meat with it.

Em held up the giant chunk of meat and looked it over. Curiously turning it over as she considered just taking a bite here and now. As Em thought a man in a sky blue Family uniform with a white apron ran up to Em shouting “Hey! Wait till it’s cut up, you don’t get the whole thing f-“ and the elderly woman held up a hand as she calmly said “Don’t worry Steven, this is a special case. This young woman, and one other who I shall also bring here have,” and she stops talking for a moment, looking up while touching her. She continued “Special privileges. In fact I am ordering them to eat as much as they can.” The man nods and says “Understood,” before returning to his post. Em looked at the elderly woman and asked “Special privileges?” the elderly woman gestured to an empty seat and said “Here, how about I explain it to you while you eat.” So, Em took her piece of meat and headed to the table.

The events had distracted me from just how hungry I was. Once I’d sat down I leaned forward and bit into the haunch of meat. The moment my tongue touched it I had a thought. This is easily the best tasting thing that has ever graced Em's tongue. She couldn’t tell you what kind of meat it was, only that it was delicious. The meals given to her had only a small scrap of meat every few months. Once Em started eating she couldn’t stop if her life depended on it. Thankfully the elderly woman didn’t seem to expect me to speak much, instead giving me a short speech as I ate. She said “Sorry to spring this on you, but that apple you ate was drugged, as I’m sure you know from losing consciousness. But that’s not all it did. It also serves as an appetite stimulant. A permanent appetite stimulant designed to make sure that you eat enough for the program.” It took everything Em had to pull her mind away from this haunch of meat enough to listen. Every bite Em took was an explosion of taste in her mouth. Every swallow dropped weight into her stomach and made her feel warm inside in a way that brought a smile to her face as she ate. Em’s hands and face were absolutely covered in a substance she didn’t even try to identify.

The elderly woman continued to talk as Em ate. She started to feel something she’d only felt before while touching herself. It made Em feel funny to have this feeling now, but Em couldn’t stop eating. As the gargantuan hunk of meat was whittled down the elderly woman continued, “And while you were out a,” she gave a long pause, settling on “Procedure was performed, it is why we need you to eat so much. This procedure will accelerate a pregnancy to the point that you can produce a child in only fifty days, plus or minus five. There is, however one price for you to pay to be so fruitful.” Em did her best to speak, but she just felt too hungry to pull the haunch from her mouth. It was here that Em realized something. She wasn’t feeling any less hungry, even as she gorged herself. The woman continued, “That price is to be paid in body fat. The process is extremely harsh on the body in two ways. Both ways can be solved through eating.” And she held up a finger as she said “First, the process drains energy out of you. Like any pregnancy you are creating a human being, and that takes resources. Resources that must be consumed at three times the ordinary rate to have the newborn ready in a third the time. More if faster, less if slower, and we want this to move as quickly as possible.” She then held up a second finger, saying “and second, the process has certain complex downsides that, to be honest, I myself do not understand fully myself. But I know its end result. Your body will not be able to handle the stress unless you are,” and she twirled a hand around until she found the word, “Cushioned. All of you. Your organs, your limbs, even your head and neck must have a thick layer of fat before doing this, and the thicker that layer is, the faster we can proceed safely.” The elderly woman then sighed and said “I know this is a terrible price, and I know that you are probably terrified, if too driven to eat to say anything about it. Well,” and the elderly woman put her hands on her knees, standing as she said “I terrible at persinal matters. So, I’m sorry, but I’ll get going before you finish eating. Steven will show you to your room when you’re done eating.” And the woman began walking out the way she’d come in.

Em was nearing the end of her piece of meat as she wracked her mind. She had just been told that her new life would be nothing but eating and having babies. Em felt that she ought to be more upset. But her mind was pulled away time and time again by the growing sense of pleasure arising from her stomach, her loins, her head and hands and feet. Em felt like she’d been drugged. Hell, she HAD been drugged, and because of this drug she couldn’t stop eating. It felt too good to even consider stopping. It felt so good that even as Em’s stomach began to hurt more and more badly from eating she just couldn’t stop. She couldn’t even bring herself to slow down. On some level Em was afraid that she was going to eat herself to death as her overfilled stomach literally burst from the pressure. The panic and fear of death wasn’t enough to change Em’s behavior. Even as the pain reaches an unspeakable height, Em still had to eat more. No, she wanted it. Em realized that some sick, insane part of herself even wanted to eat until she died.

Until she didn’t. After a truly absurd amount of food the mania that drove Em forward suddenly stopped without clear reason. As she began to belch, desperately needing to relieve some of the pressure in her stomach. It was only now that Em realized the truth, she was alone in the cafeteria. All of the other people eating had left it seems. Left while it took a herculean effort for Em to even maintain a an awareness of someone speaking to her. As Em sat, the cafeteria worker named Steve came to her, speaking loudly “You done eating yet? Can you understand me now?” Em nodded slightly, she couldn’t even bring herself to speak. Em never wanted to open her mouth again. Steve got up to Em’s seat and mumbled, “Good thing these chairs are on wheels.” As he began to roll Em out toward her room.

Steven took Em down a hallway chosen seemingly at random and wheeled her chair through the door, into a huge room. The room had bookcases against the two walls to the left and right of the entrance. In the center of the room were two absurdly large beds. Em let out a low whistle and the man said “Yeah, this room is twice the size of the normal breeder dorms, and that’s with fewer people, and be glad for that too. If my understanding is right then the two of y-“ at which point Steven was interrupted by a short woman with red hair done up in pig tails. The young woman wore the denim overalls with something green under them that indicated she was a farmer, or would have been one if not at the breeding facility anyway. She calmly waved and said “Sup roomie.” Then, before Em could give an answer Steve said “Yeah, Em doesn’t know it yet though.” Then he turned to face me and said “Okay, works like this. All of the Family’s breeders get a roommate, most get several actually. But you two are a special case. Since you’re in the same boat, the higher ups figured the same room makes sense too. Well, I’ll leave you two to get a acquainted. If you need more help then Kelly knows where to find me.” And Steve waved goodbye as he walked out the door.

Kelly said “Hi, I’m Kelly.” With a friendly wave, I nod and respond “Hey Kelly, I’m Em.” Kelly, still grinning, said something that Em never expected to hear, “I can’t wait to get nice and fat with you.” I can feel the shock overtake my face as I say “UUmmm, yeah.” Nervously as I rub my right arm with my left hand. “absolutely.” Kelly gave me an incredulous look while putting her hands on her hips. I give her a guilty smile while Kelly says “You didn’t join this on purpose, did you? Em shakes her head for a moment and Kelly says “So, I really am alone then, aren’t I?” Em asks “Alone? I mean, I didn’t volunteer, but I’m here too, right?” Kelly shook her head, saying? “You don’t get it. I want this. The food, the fat, the babies. Hell, even the roommate. This whole thing is a fantasy come true for me. Don’t get me wrong I’m no ingrate, it’s just a let down to find out that I was wrong about finding a Kindred spirit. I’ve been looking my whole life to find someone like me, somebody who loves to gain weight and watch others do the same. Especially another girl.” Kelly sighed deeply before finishing “Oh well. One step away from paradise is still damned good. I’ll take it gladly.” Em nodded and said ”I think that’s a fair ap-“ to be cut off by her stomach growling, to which Kelly said “Sounds like someone is still hungry. Didn’t eat enough today?” Em put her hands on her stomach and said “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I had the biggest meal I’ve ever seen for lunch.” To have her stomach growl again. Kelly said “Well, time for the biggest dinner then I think. See, even if gaining weight isn’t a turn on for you, you’ll be a blimp soon enough regardless.” And winked before reaching into her pocket, saying “Now, time to find out about this” and she made air quotes with her free hand as she said “’room service’ that Steve told me about. Kelly then pulled a piece of plastic covered in buttons and began pressing them as she said “Now, maybe you aren’t excited about it,” she then held the device up to her ear and finished “But I can’t wait to make a pig out of myself, and in more ways than one.” Shortly after the phone call was answered and Em hearted Kelly say “Yep. Yeah. Uh huh, great, but don’t just double it. Let’s shoot for at least twice that much.”
