Chapter 7 - the game

A few days later, Tommy stood on the football field, looking fine and sexy as hell in his kit. Jane sighed in delight looking down at him from the stands, still unable to comprehend that she was going out with such a gorgeous man. Every few seconds, she caught Tommy looking up at her and smiling from the pitch, making her heart flutter each time.

Jealous eyes regarded her with disgust all around. Everyone knew about her relationship with Tommy and each person thought it was equally odd. They really didn’t have anything in common; not the same movies, music, hobbies; Jane didn’t even have any idea what was going on down on the field. What were the rules? What was Tommy’s position even? But what they did have was love. Jane felt it every second of every day. A constant, soppy smile filled her face whenever she was with Tommy. She never thought that love would be this intoxicating; so effortless and simple; that nothing else in the whole world would matter.

“Focus, Tommy!” shouted the coach from below; his patience clearly faltering with the handsome boy.

Jane chuckled, knowing that Tommy was distracted by her. He hadn’t even wanted to play today. Tommy had desperately desired to spend the day in bed with her and shrug off all of his other responsibilities. “Go, Tommy!” she shouted in support, drawing more looks of disapproval from Tommy’s fan club of prettier girls. A spark of mischief spread in her and she laughed, raising her middle finger at the whole pack of them; more pleased with herself than ever before and loving the shocked, offended looks she received in return.

The whistle blew. Tommy took the ball and started running down the field, turning his head and looking to see if Jane was watching him.

That was when it happened. Caught unaware, Tommy fell awkwardly to the ground as he was ploughed into by one of the other players. It all seemed to happen in slow motion; Jane’s heartbeat pulsing, hammering in her throat as she watched the love of her life tumble to the ground.

Tommy lay on the field clutching his arm and wincing in pain, finally being taken to the side.

It was a disaster.

After that, everything changed.
