Li ly paced back and forth in her room, her cheeks flushed with frustration, her jeans digging uncomfortably into her waist, driving her crazy. She wasn't used to this sensation. After her conversation with Elisa, she'd finally mustered the courage to break up with Martin, whom she blamed for her predicament. “He wasn’t the right guy,” she told herself, but deep down, the truth stung. He had accepted her, perhaps even preferred her in her new chubby form, which she was beginning to despise. Yet now, the urgency to find a new boyfriend had become an almost obsessive quest she felt she needed one to regain her self-worth.
The first few weeks after breaking up with Martin were a series of humiliating moments for Lily, though she refused to fully acknowledge them. She clung to the belief that she was still the same magnetic girl, the one who turned heads wherever she went, who could make any boy fall for her with a single glance. But reality was painfully different.
Every morning, Lily prepared herself meticulously, applying makeup with surgical precision and picking outfits she thought would reclaim her spot at the center of attention. But her clothes, once reliable allies, seemed to betray her now. She stubbornly tried to squeeze into her old skinny jeans, the ones that used to hug her slim waist and accentuate her perfect curves. Now, the button threatened to pop with every breath, and the zipper simply refused to cooperate. To hide the evidence, she’d pull on a cropped shirt that only highlighted the soft roll of flesh spilling over the waistband.
At the café with her friends, she’d cross her legs with an air of practiced elegance a motion that had once come naturally but now required effort, the denim stretching taut against her thighs. She leaned against the counter, trying to exude casual confidence, throwing coy glances at the boys nearby. Instead of admiring her, they exchanged awkward looks or, worse, turned away. “Maybe they didn’t see me properly,” she reassured herself, ignoring their stifled chuckles as her belly bulged visibly over the top of her jeans.
One of her most disastrous attempts came during a party. Lily decided to resurrect an old black dress that she remembered looking stunning in. Now, though, the fabric clung unflatteringly to her softer, rounder frame, highlighting every bulge. Still, she strode into the room with feigned confidence, convinced every guy was there to see her. When she approached Marco, a classmate who used to flirt with her, she tried to adopt a sultry tone.
“Hey, Marco,” she purred, leaning casually on a chair that creaked under her weight. “Bet you didn’t expect to see me here.”
Marco hesitated, his expression a mix of uncertainty and discomfort. “Uh, yeah… you look… fine,” he mumbled, his eyes darting away as an awkward smile spread across his face. Lily mistook his reaction for shyness and decided to push further. She reached out to touch his arm, but the motion caused her dress to ride up, revealing a strip of pale, soft flesh. Marco, clearly flustered, mumbled an excuse and quickly walked away. Left standing alone with her drink, Lily convinced herself that she hadn’t been bold enough.
That night, walking home, she felt the weight of the world on her shoulders but refused to admit that her appearance might be the problem. “Guys are just idiots,” she muttered to herself. Once home, she sought solace in a package of cookies left on the kitchen counter. One became two, then three, until the entire pack was gone. The guilt hit soon after, but she drowned it out with a slice of cake from the fridge. “Tomorrow will be better,” she promised herself, oblivious to how every bite deepened the hole she was digging.
School wasn’t any better. Determined to reclaim attention, she decided to stand out in gym class, convinced that being active would turn heads. She wore a tracksuit that clung tightly to her thighs and a shirt too short to cover her belly. Trying to run gracefully, her movements only drew laughter. “Go, Lily, don’t give up!” someone shouted. Mistaking it for genuine encouragement, she pushed herself harder, only to later overhear a giggling remark: “She looks like a bouncing jelly roll.”
Each public failure fed into her cycle of anger and frustration, which she numbed with more food once she got home. But the more she ate, the tighter her world seemed to close in on her clothes that no longer fit, mirrors reflecting an unfamiliar figure, and a society that seemed to turn its back on her.
One evening, unable to hold back her tears, Lily turned to her mother. “Mom, I can’t take it anymore. I can’t find a boyfriend… and I don’t understand why. People look at me like I’m invisible.”
Her mother glanced up from her book, her expression kind but tinged with guilt. “Sweetheart, you don’t need a boyfriend to feel special. You’re still young; you have all the time in the world.”
“But I *want* to be wanted, Mom!” Lily insisted, folding her arms across her chest. “Guys used to stare at me, and now? Nothing. And I know why it’s because I’ve gained weight!” She paused, biting her lip before confessing: “I weigh 186 pounds now. I don’t even feel like myself anymore.”
Her mother studied her carefully, choosing her words with care. “Honey, weight is just a number. You’re beautiful as you are, and there are so many ways to feel confident. Maybe it’s just about making small changes in your lifestyle.”
Lily shook her head, resolute. “No, Mom. I want to be like I was before. I want guys to notice me again. I want to be… me.”
That night, as Lily shut herself in her room, her mother and older sister, Amy, exchanged knowing glances. “It’s working,” Amy whispered with a satisfied smirk. “She has no idea.”
“We need to be careful,” her mother cautioned, nodding. “If she finds out we’re behind this, she’ll rebel. Keep leaving the snacks out, and make sure her portions stay generous. It all needs to feel natural.”
Amy chuckled softly. “You should see her trying to squeeze into her jeans. It’s like watching her give up on herself every time she pulls them on. It’s... satisfying.”
