Chapter 1 : big dreams

"Well Ryan, I just don't think you realize how big of a project this is. The real estate market wouldn't really benefit from it. The cost just can't justify it. Not like you don't have the mulah to do this, I just don't see a point."
Ryan sat back in his chair and sighed heavily. "Ashley it's about more than charts and graphs, I want a proof of concept that could lead to our whole concept of home changing. Self driving cars, food that cooks and serves itself, enough production to satisfy everyone. This could be world changing if it works!" The other end of the phone went silent for a moment before responding.
"If you have to do this I can't stop you but I'm not sure I can support you either. This just seems self destructive." Ryan smiled and felt himself drift into his imagination for a moment.
"The juice is worth the squeeze, maybe when I'm done you can come and see for yourself." Ashley began to protest but Ryan hit the end call button. This idea was too good to ignore and he was already lost in the chase of it. He got up and walked to the edge of his CEO office to stare out into the city. "Paradise" He whispered as his angular face lit up.

Ryan was a tall beefy man in his mid 20s with blue eyes and dark hair who almost always wore a business suit. His father before him, Edgar Holmes had started the real estate company Happy Holmes. A successful business that profited well but did not flourish until Ryan took over. He drove himself to the top of the market in mere years. He was wildly successful, pretty, famous, rich beyond imagination and unhappy. To any onlooker he was leading the perfect life so what was missing? His spotless black shoes clicked down the stark white hallway of the newly constructed research and development building. He needed to change the world. This was not a new revelation. It had been on his mind for quite some time. How he would do it was another story.
"Ah, Ryan I..I mean Mr.CEO, Uh Sir?" The scientist before him was beat red and seemed uneasy. His white lab coat flowed loosely as Ryan picked up the pace.
"Ryan is fine. Sorry I was lost in my own little world. What were you saying?"
"I was saying that the time estimate for the technology to be ready is 2025. This however is a very rough guess. It might take more depending on the snags we encounter." Ryan stopped walking and felt his face go stern.
"That's far too long. What can I do to speed this up?"
"Well sir, hiring more staff is an option but I don't know if that will help by much for the type of projects we're undertaking."
"Tell you what, if you lab rats can get this together by 2021 I'll double whatever you earned." The scientist before him went bug eyed. "Work night and day if you have to. Trust me it'll be worth it."

"That's a fair price all things considering. This is a little over 1,000 acres of land and it's good dirt if you ask me. Not to mention that the land is all pretty flat because it used to be a farm. Not bad right? Don't answer that, your face says it all." Ryan smiled and nodded
"Yes, this looks great Lawrence. The fact that this is farmland isn't an issue though is it?"
"Heavens no, what would that have anything to do for it?"
"Just paranoid I suppose. Well let's seal the deal with them and start construction as soon as we can. Those boys in the lab are working faster than we anticipated." Ryan clapped his hands together and rubbed them in excitement. "This will be a nice switch from waiting around."

Ryan stood on top of a pile of lumber in his business suit with a hard hat on as he watched the frame of the first house go up. He felt his heart flutter as his dream began to feel very real. Suddenly though a thought came to him. Who was to be allowed in the city? In all his years daydreaming problems such as this didn't occur to him. He couldn't just let in the super wealthy, this wasn't anything about money. Dropping from the pile of lumber he began to walk the imaginary streets and ponder the problems. How much would it cost? What about businesses? Currency? He hoped that R&D had thought of this, he sure hadn't.

"Fear not, we have several proposals to ease your worries. Starting with the largest issue, currency and businesses!" Ryan was nervous to say the least. Chewing his fingernails as the lab coat in front of him laid out a plan and model "The frames of the housing you built are great 2 story houses that should be able to house a family if needed although we just had the idea that it would be a single resident per household at least for this testing period. If everything we made works out however, there will be no need for business." Even Ryan paused at this and furrowed his brow.
"What do you mean? How is that possible?" Ryan didn't think that the team had been up to the task. He was sure he had been setting the bar too high and was hoping they would hit just below it. Never did he expect to see them surpass what he had asked.
"Well sir, we've developed a system that can self produce whatever people might want and deliver it in seconds via tubes. It even is able to create the resources needed using a hyper advanced form of what is most easily describable as atom smashing. We're jumping decades ahead of our time here. We've even made an AI to control it all. Self driving cars, durable roads, repairing robots that can fix anything that breaks, a water filtration system that reaches...well you get the picture. This will be a place where you don't have to lift a finger."
"Who do we let in though? Everyone would want in this town and I don't really want things to be first come first serve or money based."
"Well, have you thought about having a simple lottery?"
"That could work."
"And a name, we would need a name."
"How does 'Paradise' sound?"

"Ashley, what do you say? I can offer you a guaranteed spot in the town." The phone held an uneasy silence for a moment. "You'd never need to lift a finger again. They are expecting things to be finished about 2024. Oh man, you should see it, the roads are being paved, greenery planted, houses are going up, we have a gigantic mall, a nearby beach and you can" Ashley cut him off.
"Ryan, please. I'm not interested. It would be a huge move for me. Besides, I'm holding the fort while you are off in la la land." She smiled "I think what you're doing is great but I'm more interested in the business that you've made than the dream you have."
"Alright then, I make you a deal. You've been a trusted partner for years. Come and live here for 3 months and try it out. If you like it, you stay, if not you can have the business." Ashley felt her jaw drop.
"I....I'd have to move everything over though."
"Going once."
"What if I get homesick"
"Going twice."
"I...I...I think"
"Last chance"
"Okay! I'll do it." Ryan felt elated as his forceful offer won her over.
"I'll even let you take first pick of the housing."
"This better be worth it." The phone clicked and Ryan felt a grin grow on his face as his grand plan came together.
