With five seconds remaining, Josephine shoved her face forward and into the moist deliciousness that awaited her. Both hands rose to snatch it from Megan’s palm and, with increasing speed, shovel it into her wide mouth. Frosting dappled Josephine’s cheeks and chin, and the dark chocolate stained her lips. Grunting and moaning, she devoured the cupcake and stood wavering in place. Relief, embarrassment, and pleasure flitting across her face in equal measure.

Megan’s arms dropped to her sides, and she watched the gluttonous display for only a moment before storming from the room and slamming the kitchen door behind her. The sound echoed throughout the tiny house, causing both Sam and Josephine to cringe. A long, sudden silence filled the room, and Sam stood with a heartfelt smile. They embraced again and he couldn’t help but laugh when she delicately burped. He helped Josephine to his car and kissed her deeply before they pulled out onto the main road to head home.

“How did you know? How were you so sure I would eat it?” She reached over and took one of his hands in hers, their fingers interlocked tightly.

“Because you’re my girl.” Sam squeezed her hand, and she returned it with a sheepish grin. “Oh, and don’t worry, I’ve got you five more waiting at home. I know you’ve got to be hungry.” He rubbed the bulging outer curve of her belly with the back of his knuckles.

Josephine giggled. “Oh, thank God. I’m starving….”

They drove on and the morning sun lit their way.
